Promote “bicycle pooling” system to encourage people who work near to a particular location (or nearby region) to cycle together. This not only reduces environmental pollution but also allows people to interact & exercise together. A group activity encourages bonding & people would be more motivated to do the exercise together than if they are doing it alone.

Although papers such as Today and My Paper are convenient for commuters to catch the latest news on trains and buses every morning, it’s an increase in wastage of paper. They are usually discarded after being read and an office accumulate a few copies instead of sharing one. Some elderly just use them to wrap their purchases from the wet market. Stop printing them altogether. It’s also a nuisance when someone next to you reads the papers on crowded trains.
By Eris Teo

To be more effective in reducing plastic bags for purchases, stop providing them totally instead of charging a nominal fee or 5 or 10 cents. Customers will not feel the pinch if the surcharge is not significant. If unable to stop supplying plastic bags, the surcharge should be adjusted to 50 cents onwards and the proceeds to go to WWF or other charitable organisations. Discount can also be given to customers who bring their own bags to encourage them.

Have a “Click Switch!” (or similar name of a catchy nature) campaign to remind Singaporeans to perform the simple task of turning off all switches if they don’t need to use electricity. It’ll be targeted to involve the whole family, with each reminding other members whenever an unused switch is not switched off. Before going out for the day, a boy could remind “Daddy, have you click switch?”

Schools can organise periodic arts & craft lessons involving the use of recycled objects. These handicrafts can be sold in funfairs to raise funds for specific charities or for Earth Day related charities. Funfairs can be organized at a school or nation-wide level, involving all students & their families. Besides promoting awareness of the importance of protecting our Earth, it would also help strengthen bonds within families during these “family activities”!

Save the environment as if your life depends on it…..(and it DOES) • Purchases in bulk to save packing material. Reduce individually wrapped packages. • During BBQ & outdoor parties, use permanent plates rather than plastic and Styrofoam. • Gift wrap with newspaper. • Use both sides of paper while printing. • Install solar panels for heating. RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE
By Sanat Khandekar from Changkat Primary School

To reduce our impact on environment we should reduce our interference with it. Make saving the earth FASHIONABLE….. • Traffic signal countdowns at each traffic signal to aid switching off of vehicle engines. • Use cloth shopping bags • Use environmentally friendly detergents • Water/drink glass bottles can be sold with a deposit and the bottles returned after use as per age-old practice. Conserve and then Save the EARTH!!!!

Some have never taken public transport before, and do not want to. They should be encouraged to and everyone else must learn to use it more frequently. This will make the number of people using cars to decrease. This way, the demand of cars will also go down, and so will for taxis. And since more people are in one vehicle, the pollution rate will decrese. Therefore, we should take public transport.

There weren't so many disposable products in the olden days. We had live to get use to those foam packaging, plastic and paper carrier, disposable utensils etc. I had been trying to cut down these usages and I urged people of the World to do likewise. Sacrifice a little convenience on our part can leave a healthier world for our children.
By Voon Foong Chia

Environment ministry must take the lead to lay out steps in guiding citizen to eliminate waste and be ecologically responsible. They should set a KPI to hasten a documented progress accordance to Copenhagen convention, and ensure any determined targets are not superficial. With official documentation, this can set a benchmark for other countries to pursue. Without government’s active participation, all talks of Saving Gaia are rather shallow.
By Hon Fah Chia

Business phone (or PDA) makers should incorporate a name card reading device to electronically scan in business associates' contact information. We shall gradually eliminate giving out name cards. It's a small gesture, but big step towards eliminating waste. Help save the trees!
By Voon Foong Chia

Everyone can do their part. For e.g. Take the public transport instead of driving cars (Carpool with others if there's really a need to drive.), unplug unused appliances and switch off all power sockets when not in use, frequent to nature reserves or nature parks where we can truly unwind (instead of watching television and such). There is so much life nature has to offer but most people don't realise that (sadly). Life is all around us. We just need to take time out to appreciate it.

Use reusable containers to store food instead of aluminum foil, cling wrap or plastic bags. I think this is the smart way that will preserve our food and keep it fresh for the longest time. GO GREEN involves everyone, let's play our role!

To start being indifferent and pretend we are doing enough to save our planet, simple acts of caring for the environment will do but we need to show it to affect people like you and me who care but lack encouragement do more.

Given the amount of sunlight we get daily throughout the year, we should use solar power as the main source of energy given its replicability. Only if this has been depleted, then we can use electricity as an alternative power source. I hope to see more solar, wind and hydro powered devices being used soon.

HDB should allow and encourage residents to use nearby garden spaces more, making own compost etc. These activities are not restricted to "landed properties" residents. Annual celebrations (e.g. contests, mass clean-up of beaches etc.) of recycling and green activities, not just occasional fad festivals that are not maintained. I cannot name an Annual "Green activity" in Sg.

Nowadays, schools often print a lot of newsletters and consent forms for students to bring home for their parents to read and sign. It’s still a waste of paper even though they might be printed on both sides. Suggest for schools to print only important information for distribution, and normal welcome-back-to-school messages can be posted on school websites for viewing. Consent forms can be replied online and school administrator to sms confirmation to parents’ mobile phones for authentication.

Cut down on providing plastic containers for takeaway food. Even though they are convenient and can be re-heated in microwave but the conventional plastic is sufficient. Plastic containers are often too oily to be washed and reused, hence being discarded. Discount can be given to promote customers to bring their own tiffin carrier. Same applies for disposable utensils; stop supplying them and encourage customers to bring their own washable utentils. Using disposable chopsticks is also bad for our health.
By Eris Teo

Challenge yourself to keep reducing your electricity bill. This is good for the earth — and your wallet. Use solar-powered gadgets. Invest in smart power strips, which detect when a piece of equipment is not in use and cut power to it automatically. Otherwise, your office equipment keeps sucking up electricity even when you’re not using it.
By Bee Tin Goh

Go Green with offices! Reduce the impact of your paper use by buying paper made with 100 percent chlorine-free, and FSC certified. That said, use paper only when you need it, and do use both sides of each sheet. Use natural light from a window, as much as possible. Replace all your bulbs with CFL bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights (CFL) use up less energy, last longer, and produce less pollution than incandescent bulbs. They also give a warm, pleasant light.

Law should enforce hawkers giving reasonable discount to customers bringing own carrier for takeaways. We could save considerable amount of non-biodegradable foam boxes from waste and doing Mother Earth a great favour while saving some money too! On the other hand, government should consider eliminating use of foam in food packaging. The old laminated paper for wrapping food create less hazard ecologically, although it takes longer to pack, we are giving the Earth and our future generations more breathing space!

We can reduce our impact on the environment simply by eating less! Less food => People of less mass => Less space on earth taken up => Earth overcrowding reduced Less food => Less flora and fauna are sacrificed in the name of mankind => Less extinction and deforestation => Less ecological destruction Less food => Less food packaging => Less harmful chemicals are emitted while producing these packaging

Students often stay back late after class to work on their tutorials and assignments. This not only waste electricity for power, light and aircon but also extended the campus warden’s working hours. Campus can set power socket supply to terminate and to dim lights 1 or 2 hours after the last class ended. Announcements can be made over the PA system to remind students to save their documents and leave the campus before power supply is cut.
By Eris Teo

Students often waste a lot of money and papers printing reference books for their assignments as these reference books are not loanable from the library. The library can let students pay a nominal amount as subscription fee to view these reference books online instead. To prevent copyright issues, the viewing can be limited by day or the contents being disabled from direct copying and pasting. This saves on having the unwanted printouts being discarded after the assignments are done.

Fuel-effective and cost-effective planning of buses: It is important that we replan our bus frequency and bus routes as many bus services which are not used as much as other bus services tend to travel empty; this is a wastage of fuel and time. Many times, the same bus services travel one after the other; that again is wasting fuel. Making sure that this doesn’t happen by using a better planned bus service system, we can prevent the wastage of resources.
By Sovereigna Lakhotia from Global Indian International School East Coast

Use of public transport: The frequency and distribution of buses i.e the bus routes should be revised. Some bus services which are not used quite often and at times are empty, are not required and fuel is just getting wasted. It is time to change the bus distribution so as to use the fuel effectively, where maximum number of commuters can travel. Also, at times two buses of the same number travel one after the other, it is important to make sure that doesnt happen. The planning of the buses can be done more effectively to avoid wastage of resources, so we can SAVE OUR PLANET!

This idea will blow off everyone's mind. Generate energy power from human activities. Mini dynamos built in doors, shoes, wheels, windows...etc They already exist but not in great scale. Just take shoes for example, if every step you(billions of you) make can generate one watt of electricity. How many steps do you take a day?

Water:- when you taking shower keep the water for washing floor, for the rice water can use for plant, using washing machine for washing clothing, the water can keep for washing the toilet. Electricity:- Use air-con change to use fan, all the electric items have to switch off the main switch. All the foods to put into the refrigerator must let the food temperature to cool down.

Outcome from our focus group discussion: 1)We suggest all HDB blocks to have a build-in centralised refuse chute which categorised waste into general(existing), paper, plastic & can (4 compartments). Based on waste collected in each zone, town council may consider to refund the service & conservancy charges for zone that can contribute the most of recycled items. 2) MOE can add on 'green' subject as part of the compulsory module that teaches us to behave in 'green' movement & to love our earth.

By Hui Ming Tan from NA

Very often, people switched on lights, televisions, computers, fans and other electrical appliances without using them. The excuse is that they will return to use within minutes but never did that due to forgetfulness and laziness. I feel that the plugs of every such devices should be fixed with a timer to automatically cut off the power supply after a stipulated time such as 5 minutes. If this idea is implemented, we can be assured that alot of energy will be saved throughout the world!

Turn down aircon on public transport and shopping malls at night. There are lesser commuters and shoppers after certain time and it tends to be freezing when you sit in the public transport or walk around the malls. Relevant authorities should be able to make the necessary adjustments to the aircon system to save on electricity. After closure of malls, exterior lights can be dimmed or partially switched off (without compromising safety); too glaring can be harmful to our eyes.
By Eris Teo

Put shopping mall escalators and lifts on standby mode when nobody uses them after a certain time. Escalators can be adjusted to move slower or to a complete stop after specific times. Lift lights can be dimmed and ventilation temporary switched off when nobody uses them.

At work, we have adopted the following habit when we submit documents for processing. We print two pages of document per side of paper and we print on both sides. We are also proposing to place a recycle bin at all main printers at our workplace to provide convenience. It will reduce paper wastage, reduce our carbon footprint and save our forest and habitats at the same time.
By Siew Chong Liew from NIL

Instead of asking/praying/hoping that individuals make a change to their already well-formed bad habits, why not set up recycling bins @ fast food restuarants. Each time i go to Mcdonalds, i see A LOT of papers, plastic/paper cups, straws being thrown away instead of being recycled.
By Maximillium Yip

Everynight all HDB corridors, void deck & staircase all light up throughtout the night, thus, extremely waste of electricity. My Suggestion to only permanently light up only void deck. For staircase & corridors install motion detector and gradually change all fluorescent or energy saving lights to Bright LED (LED last longer , cheaper & use consume very little power ). Such ideas can apply to all public areas like busstops / parks / billboards etc.. where lighting are required.

Water leftover from mopping floor or after washing clothes can be used to scrub corridor. Sometimes, monthly washing of corridors is not enough, especially for those living at higher levels where the corridor is unusually dusty. Leftover water contains detergent, thus not required to use additional for cleaning. Just need to use small amount of clean water to flush away the detergent. Better still to do it right before the monthly washing; not necessary to waste additional clean water.

Overdue newspapers in office can be consolidated and sold to rag-and-bone man for recycling. During spring cleaning can use them to clean glass surfaces and windows. If required to repaint office, can use them to protect desks and office equipments. Certain jobs that require maintenance of vehicles, can lay them on ground to prevent spillage of oil. Otherwise, bring home (if permitted) to line pet’s cage or wrap pet’s poo instead of using plastic bags during strolling.

We should organise Earth hour monthly as it is more effective rather than yearly. To make it more meaningful, (schools, companies) can organise a gathering among the students and staffs so all of them can gather as one to reduce the impact on the environment. They can bring their own candles and torchlights to make it more fun and exciting. With many organisations doing so, we can help to reduce the effect of global warming as a nation.

One useful way to save our Earth is through using of canefield paper. This paper, compared to Virgin and Recycled paper is friendlier. It is 80% tree-free from sugar cane waste and 20% certified plantation fibre instead of trees making it 100% biodegradable and recyclable. Even the manufacturing process is sustainable and eco-friendly. Through using this paper, you are not only reducing the environment impact, you'll be preserving the rainforests. Two actions our future generations would surely thank us for.

Have more can/bottle recycling machines around. For every item recycled, a label would be issued. Accumulated labels could be used to redeem free items or prizes (which need not be extravagant but people would still be enticed by these freebies!). The use of a cute mascot could draw the public's (esp children) attention. It's also be an important representation of our country's effort & commitment towards saving our planet Earth!

Instead of forcing people to do something unwillingly (E.g. making them pay for plastic bags) which made them complaint and grunt. Why not deliver information’s & knowledge’s to them (E.g. what will happen to their next generation?) and let them act willingly? The internet allows messages to be passed around fast. Making websites, groups, and forums to deliver information’s to them, isn’t it easier & practical? I've done my part by creating a group @ http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=361456606658 . Start introducing "electronic books" (e.g. CD, DVD) in libraries & schools. This would cut down usage of paper for books as well as reduce storage space. Though certain people may still prefer physical books, we could target our efforts towards the young (kids, school children). As it's always easier for young people to adapt to "new" things, we could be successful in creating an "electronic book" culture from our next generation onwards!Nweo

Many households have more than 1 television. We should encourage families to get together to watch TV programs using 1 television (e.g. in the living room). This would help save electricity (prevent power usage from multiple TVs, lights & fans/aircon switched on in the rooms with these TVs) & also promote family cohesiveness at zero cost.

As a responsible driver, it is important to practise eco-driving to minimize fuel consumption, emissions, and save money! Start by researching and buying fuel economical cars if need be, and always plan our routes to avoid unnecessary detours. Simple measures such as removing unnecessary baggage from the vehicle, turning off the engine while idling, avoid sudden starts, accelerations and stops, closing windows on highways to prevent air drag, and servicing the engine regularly should always be practiced.

Recycle printed paper by using the other side to print other documents or emails for reading on-the-go. Can be used as rough paper for writing memos by cutting into smaller pieces or can let kids do their homework rough working. Should try to maximise paper by printing 2 pages on 1 sheet or print 4 to 6 powerpoint slides on a page; double-sided. Fully utilised paper can be shredded before sending for recycling; safeguarding company’s secrets at the same time.

Instead of recycling, it is more important to “precycle” – by purchasing products based on how recyclable they are, or avoid bringing home items which will generate waste. Parents can set the example by encouraging children to bring a small polypropylene water bottle whenever they are out to prevent buying bottled / can drinks. This reduces plastic waste, saves money, and is healthier too. We should also practise buying consumables in bulk to reduce packaging, usually at a cheaper price!
By Jer Yuen Ting

We should not create emissions from the transport related like cars, freight and distribution, etc and from heat, light, power and refrigeration which actually increases the amount of "Carbon Footprints." This Carbon Footprint actually increases the chances of increasing global warming and accelerated climate change. So the question rises is that "If we can make the things back to normal again, aren't we?"

We can support local produce! :) In doing so, a product would not have travelled across the globe to sit on the shelf of a supermarket, for us to pick up. If everyone did that conscientiously - from stall-owners to the mothers who do grocery shopping - I think we would reduce our impact on the environment. Buying reusable paper/cloth bags (instead of over-using plastic ones) would help too :)

Thus controlling wastage.

We should all be locavores, as in people who eat only locally grown food. This would greatly reduce our total food miles, which is the distance that a food item travels from its source to the consumer. This metric should be included on packaging by local food producers to keep consumers better informed. In addition, being an ethical eater helps too, by eating food that meets certain ethical guidelines, e.g. organically grown food, humanely raised poultry, meat, and fish.

Singapore have thousands of HDB(Housing and Development) flats with rubbish chute in each apartment. I suggest that the HDB install another chute for recyclable items. Most of us are not motivated to recycle because of having to carry down the items that we want to recycle. Thus, this measure can be taken or maybe by installing the recycling chute near the lift area. This will reduce the waste that are needed to be burnt.

Don't have buses wait 45 minutes on Orchard boulevard with AC on and empty before starting their shift. There are usually at least 5 there every morning. Turn off the huge electric light billboards at midnight every single night. Create real bike lanes along several main routes so safe for all to use instead of having to use cars. Best thing is, they are very affordable, and are also very suitable for those with sensitive skin / eczema due to the natural anti-bacterial properties!
